Tuesday Dinner: Mexican Street Corn Chowder

OK, let’s hear it. How was your summer? Mine was not too summery. I did a lot of work, some of it fun, some of it a slog, and didn’t relax or travel much. Luckily, we ended the summer with a weeklong trip to Southern California. We spent most of our time in San Diego, and went to out eat almost every meal. Pistol—the Provençal version of pesto—for tod Pistol—the Provençal version of pesto—for today’s soup. The smell and taste of @tomaterofarm basil is grounding and reassuring to me these days—it’s a sensual punch in the face face reminding me to notice the here and now instead of letting myself get lost in the swirling whirl of worry and dread and sadness about the state of the world and our country. Yes, things are bad, but also there is basil. So we rest and eat...and then we’re ready go back out and do the work to make the world better. •

Zucchini-tarragon soup for customers today. Lots o Zucchini-tarragon soup for customers today. Lots of tarragon from my parents’ garden, zucchini from @tomaterofarm. Creamy from cashews, not dairy—but it’s not vegan, because I sautéed the onions in butter. Although it was delicious (especially with garlic-mustard croutons), I totally flubbed Cinco de Mayo. I made tortilla soup two weeks ago when I should have made it today. If that’s the worst mistake I make during this pandemic, though, I’m doing alright. •

(Notice I did not say “I grew these.” The only credit I get is for not killing this plant in the ten years that I’ve lived here.)

Happy May Day! We went up and down the street and Happy May Day! We went up and down the street and left bouquets for the neighbors—on front gates instead of front doors this year. But I like to combine holidays, so I chant “workers of the world unite!” at the same time. And I will not be buying anything from Amazon, Instacart, or even Target today. •

Pulled these individual pineapple upside down cake Pulled these individual pineapple upside down cakes out of the oven—if you listen closely you can hear the bubbling butter-brown sugar-pineapple juice. And the whole house smells like dessert. •
